Project #20 Sheila Hicks Textile Sculptures
Sheila Hicks is a British artist known primarily for her textile works.
She often wraps string, yarn and fabric in different colors to create organically formed sculptural elements.
To create something similar take plastic grocery bags, discarded and crumpled papers, cotton batting, old pieces of foam and similar materials into small forms. Tape or tie them together so that they stay solid. Tie some fabric, string or yarn around an object and wrap it around the inner form. Keep adding strings, yarns and strips of fabrics until you like the end result.
You can allow one layer of wrapping to show through underneath another one.
Create any pattern, mixture of colors or combination of textures that you would like to.
When you have made a few or more of the wrappings attach them to a wall with small nails. Think about how you will arrange them - height, order and distance apart before putting the nails in the wall. Or lay them on the floor.
What will you title your piece(s)?
