Project #23 Cy Twombly and Found Object Sculptures
The artist Cy Twombly created mostly paintings during his career but he also made some beautiful sculptures. His sculptures were very raw and made using combinations of rough wood, found objects, plaster and paint. Some of those sculptures were molded and cast in bronze but they retained a very raw and rough look even after being cast. I think of them as objects that materialized from Twombly's thoughts.
Some were painted and drawn on after being cast in bronze.
To create something like Cy Twombly's sculptures collect some things around the house like small cardboard boxes that you can use for a base, twigs, old silk flowers, pebbles, crumple paper and other objects with nice shapes.
Arrange and glue the objects together using Elmer's Glue All or wood glue. For difficult to glue objects like plastics and metals, try using a two part epoxy such as JB Weld. I have had good results with that brand. Always mix and adhere expoxies outdoors with adult supervision and leave outside until they cure.
When the adhesives are completely dry, paint the entire assemblage with white latex house paint or spray paint. You can also choose another color of paint. Painting everything the same color unifies all of the textures and helps you see the elements of the sculpture joined together as one whole object.
You may want to add some drawing or writing on your sculpture with graphite or even small bits of color like Cy Twombly did.
The beauty of this project is that you can create sculptures on a small to large scale.
