Project #14 Full body Portraits

To create a full body portrait is helpful to understand body proportions.  Centuries ago after much study of the human figure, proportional guidelines were created.  Using these guidelines will help you draw or paint or even sculpt figures.

The basic unit of measurement is the 'head', which is the distance from the top of the head to the chin. This unit of measurement is credited to the Greek sculptor Polykleitos (fifth century BCE) and has long been used by artists to establish the proportions of the body.

See the drawing below to use as a reference if you are drawing from life.  Either sketch contour lines from a live model or photo or use Project #5  to transfer contour lines from a reference photograph.  It is best to draw the contour lines lightly in case they need to be adjusted.

As with any drawing or painting make sure that your proportions are correct and everything in the proper place before you start working on shading and detail.

The above painting was created from a reference photograph instead of a live model.  It is painted with oil.   Some colored pencil was used for very small linear details in the tatoos.

Try drawing from both photos and live models.  Each has their own challenges.
