Project #10 Oscar Guerra Collaged Stripes

Oscar Guerra is an artist from Corpus Christi, TX who creates collages out of commercially printed ephemera:  wallpapers, advertisements, packaging and comic book pages and artist's materials: pieces of prints and painted papers.

Some of Guerra's works are very hard edged and brightly colored such as the first collage very much like Pop Art.  Others are painterly and subtle with complex tonal details.

Guerra's collages tend to be arranged as vertical stripes but the stripes are of varied width and using diagonals to create movement, torn papers that add an organic element and strong contrast using darks and lights and complimentary colors.

Oscar says this about the smaller collages, "Those small collages from 2017 were made from old baseball cards.  They were 'timed' pieces.  I would put on a 45 record, and if I wasn't able to 'resolve' in that 2-3 min window, I'd cut it up and restart."

Using Oscar's timed method is a great challenge for making small pieces.  Listen to a song and try finishing the collage by the time the song finishes.
Try using various paper ephemera and strong vertical stripes to create a collage inspired my Guerra's artworks.  I recommend using Elmer's Glue All, YES Paste or Aleene's Tacky Glue.  All three are acid free.

Vocabulary: collage, ephemera, Pop Art, vertical, diagonal, organic
