Project #28 Yellow

Lucio Fontana, "Untitled"

Color is powerful.  It can create physical and emotional responses in viewers.  It has the power to calm, to excite and sometimes to revolt.

When teaching about color, tones and tints, it can be helpful to show examples of artworks that use tones and tints of a color.  Here are some examples of yellows in different artworks.  Think about how the color yellow can add power to an artwork.

How do you feel about the color yellow?

Have you tried making tones and tints of yellow?  Add small amounts of neutral grey to make tones and small amounts of white to make tints.  Try mixing yellow with purple, its opposite on the color wheel.  How do you turn yellow into orange?  Try making three different oranges.  How do you turn yellow into green?  Try making three different greens.  How would you use the color yellow?

Below are some artworks that use the color yellow in different ways.
